A Senior Seminar Experience

Editor’s note: Recently, Adam Sutton, a senior at Holyoke Catholic High School, participated in his school’s Senior Seminar.  He was an intern at Catholic Communications for two weeks and got a first-hand look at the work of Real to Reel, Chalice of Salvation, iobserve.org, and the Catholic Mirror. He covered, wrote, voiced and help edit a story about an art project for veterans at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. The story, which aired on May 26,  featured students from the Elms College and Holyoke Catholic.

Adam was asked to keep a “scrapbook” about his time at Catholic Communications and filed this blog report.

SENIOR SEMINAR EXPERIENCE

I was nervous walking into my first day as an intern at Catholic Communications, but the Red Sox sign on the door of my seminar guide, Peggy Weber, let me know I was in good hands.

On the first day I found our I would be helping to produce a story for Real to Reel. I had no problem with doing a standup, but found that it was very difficult. I think it came out pretty well.

My second day included the grueling porcess of logging video for the story. This is where you select shots to be used in the television piece.

The logged video clips would later be inserted and edited into the story.

I also would help to write an article that would go on iobserve.org.

In the main editing suite, I learned many interesting facts about video production and editing. Here is where I also would do the voice work for my story.

Chief videographer and editor, Bill Pacocha, is working on the Real to Reel story. I spent a good deal of time watching Bill working in the edit suite.

A gadget of some sort….

Wednesdays included going out on host segments for Real to Reel with Bill and Sharon.

I had to hold up this reflector to get the proper lighting during the shoot.

This shoot was done at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Springfield for the Memorial Day broadcast.

I got to sit behind the scenes in the Chalice Television Studio during production. Very Cool!

Note: Adam will continue his studies in the fall at the University of Southern California (USC) where he will study film and script writing.
